CCCS of Hampton Roads provides free credit report reading. 

Reading a Credit Report:

What information is on your credit report:

  • Identification such as: Name, address, social security number, birthday, and spouses name. This information is on there so you cannot be confused with other people that have similar names.  Make sure to read all entries to make sure the information is correct.

  • Credit History: Your credit history contains open and paid credit accounts, indicates late payments reported by your creditors. If you find any information that is incorrect, make sure to submit a dispute letter to the credit reporting agency.

  • Negative information such as late payments, foreclosures, and evictions stay on your credit report for 7 years.

  • Inquiry: It shows who has viewed you credit report in the last 24 months (2years). Only companies that have received your written authorization can check your credit history.

  • Public Records: Bankruptcies, tax liens, judgments, and overdue child support will also be on the credit report.

The length of time information is being retained and remains on your file.

  • Credit and Collection accounts will be reported for seven years from the date of the last activity from the creditor.

  • Chapter 13 and Chapter 11 bankruptcy will be reported for ten years from the date filed.

  • Chapter seven remains on your credit report for seven years.

  • All other courthouse records remain on the credit report for seven years from date filed.

Make sure to take a close luck at all the information listed on your credit report. If anything is mistaken contact the credit bureau immediately and submit a dispute letter
